Trendy Wedding in Yaletown, Vancouver – Reed + Jade

Jade and Reed (or Stephen as some know him) called me from Vancouver this past winter to share their wedding plans while searching for a photographer. When I heard about their reception in Yaletown with a live band at the ultra cozy and modern Brix Restaurant & Wine Bar, I knew it was a wedding I would love to be a part of. What really excited me was their outgoing personalities and desire for photos that captured their love for one another in a passionate way. I knew just from talking to them on the phone that they had tons of flair. They always found a way to make me chuckle – no pun intended – when chiming in on each other’s comments about the wedding or what they loved about one another. I instantly knew why their friends described them as being ‘cute.’

I haven’t taken time to write much about ‘First Looks’ in the past, but they seem to becoming more and more popular.  It has always been traditional for the bride and groom to first see each other at the ceremony. Although I have no problems with this (it is what I did at my wedding), I am beginning to see some things that I love about the ‘First Look’ taking place prior to the ceremony. This became even more apparent to me at Reed and Jade’s wedding.

There are so many emotions flowing through one’s body on the wedding day. When the groom first sees his bride at the ceremony, it is natural to respond formally. After all, there are usually 50-200 pairs of eyes watching the reaction. It is beautiful, but it is also so different compared to the reaction the bride and groom have when they first see each other in private. In this case the emotions and words spoken are raw. There is no hiding anything and no need to rush on to the vows.

On their Wedding day, Reed and Jade first met at a beautiful staircase in the lobby of Hotel Georgia. Jade peaked around the stairs waiting for her groom and once he arrived their eyes were locked on each other until they met. Smiles were infectious while I photographed with my assistant from a distance. I am sure whatever they whispered to one another was beautiful. They shared numerous hugs, a few kisses and Reed finished by spinning Jade around to see how truly stunning she was in her dress.

Following the ‘First Look’ we proc

eeded to pictures of the happy couple and their wedding party. We spent the better part of 2.5 hours making our way through the hotel, parts of Yaletown, and Vancouver. I should also mention that the weather was amazing. This perfectly sunny day was followed by a stormy day that canceled my ferry back to Vancouver Island.

After all of our wedding party photos we made our way to Brix for the ceremony in perfect covered courtyard that was even warmed with heat lamps. I’ll let the pictures tell the rest of the story…
Stay tuned for Reed and Jade’s ‘Trash the Dress’ session…
